Synopsis:
In 1989, eleven-year-old Liao Jie lived a frugal life with his father, saving every penny for their dreams of buying a house. However, under the volatile Taiwanese economy, their goal slips further and further away, until one fateful day, Liao Jie unexpectedly befriends their cunning landlord, the “Old Fox”. His friendship with the Old Fox allows him to taste the power wealth brings, and as his desperation for his dream grows, Liao Jie must grapple with the reality of his honest life with his poor father, and the deceitful but rewarding ways of an “Old Fox”.

Ya-Chuan Hsiao
Ya-Chuan Hsiao, born in 1967 in Changhua, Taiwan, graduated from National Taipei University of the Arts. His filmmaking talent emerged early, earning multiple Golden Harvest Awards for his short films during school. In 1998, he began his cinematic career as an assistant director for Hsiao-Hsien Hou’s "Flowers of Shanghai." Hsiao's debut feature, "Mirror Image" (2000), won "Best Film" and "Best New Director" at the Taipei Film Festival and gained international acclaim. His 2010 film, "Taipei Exchange," was nominated for “Best Original Film Song” at the Golden Horse Awards. In 2018, "Father to Son" received the “Best Director” award at the Taipei Film Festival and was featured in the Rotterdam International Film Festival's Big Screen Competition. His latest film, "Old Fox" (2023), won four major awards at the Taipei Film Festival and earned him the “Best Director” award at the 60th Golden Horse Awards. Hsiao is renowned for his delicate emotional portrayals and captivating storytelling, skillfully integrating complex emotions and social issues into his films. His works often explore themes of fate, identity, family, and human nature, using refined visual language and evocative music to resonate with audiences.
