Kim Sung-soo (Seoul, 1961) is a screenwriter and film director who studied at the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts), where he majored in film. He quickly made it into the Korean film industry by directing his first feature films. His first, Run Away (1995), was inspired by one of his previous short films Dead End (1993). In his debut he already introduced the noir genre in Korean cinema, both with Beat (1997) and City of the Rising Sun (1998),two blockbusters that portray hopeless youth. Later, he directed Virus (2013) and Asura: The City of Madness (2016). 12.12: The Day (2023) emerges from a personal experience. At the age of 19, on the night of December 12, 1979, Kim Sung-soo heard gunshots from his home in Hannam-dong, Seoul. This film chronicles how the life of a country changed as a result of the military insurrection of December 12, 1979 and the dictatorship it instituted until 1993.
